Science Day
Owls - talked about owls and their habits and how they hunt and function. J was very interested and responded positively when I suggested getting more books about owls from the library.
Bird Calls - very briefly discussed bird calls and how to do them.
Studying nature - talked about needing to be patient to study nature. Suggested in the spring we will go for walks after the baby is born and take lots of breaks so that we can study certain areas and maybe draw pictures or take notes about what we see.
Moon - Talked about the moon landing and about the phases of the moon. Once again, I had no idea what makes the moon look what way, if the earth is in front, behind, etc... *sigh*. I'll check wikipedia. Also talked a little about solar system and orbit paths.
Woodland Habitat - talked about what can be found in the woods at what seasons.
Brain Quest: J & P

Finished deck 1!!! Onto deck 2.

Art and Math day
Not much to do in the math and art departments, but the stuff we did do was fun.
Art - Appreciation for detail. It was revealed in the FIAR book that there were many hidden animals in Owl Moon that we had not discovered. Went through the book to see if we could find them all. Also J pointed out similies and metaphors as we read. He's getting way into that. =)
Math - Concept of time. Got out a stopwatch and in turn J, P and I all raised our hands for however long we thought a minute was. P got 29.94 seconds, I got 1:11 seconds and J got 57.24 seconds!! Way to go J! Just like Daddy.
Time altering - talked about the "1 min, 3 min, 100 min" description in book about looking at the owl. I would call this more of a literary device than a math concept. Other examples that could be used, "time stood"; "time went on forever", etc.
DST - Discussed shorter and longer days according to what time of year it is and why that happens...
History: J & P
PB - James Buchanan
Math: J
SSMW - traced numbers - DONE WITH SSMW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Birthday Andy!
FIAR: J & P
All the kids love this book - C is back into sitting with us and reading again =)
Language Day
Metaphors and Similies - explained that similies don't only have to do with what words are used in a sentence, but with the specific way they are compared. To my great 31 year old shame, I was unclear on this fact until now. J liked this lesson a lot, he loved the part where I would say a simile and he would try to turn it into a metaphor. Sometimes not so easy!
Hyperbole - reviewed definition of hyperbole and then picked out examples in the book. Discussed why someone might use this literary device.
POV - Asked J if this story was 1st or 3rd person. He not only got the answer correct but was able to cite specific examples that showed it was 1st person. GENIUS!
History: J & P
PB - Franklin Pierce - J was able to list through the former presidents easily today. I paged through the 1st 13 presidents and stated 1 fact and asked J to tell me who the president was. Got it right every time but once. Then as I was about to state a fact on the one remaining president, he said, "John Quincy Adams, cos that's the only one you haven't said yet." And he was right.
Math: J
SSMW pgs 127-129 - column adding and subtracting; figuring out x; counting by 1s, 5s, 10s; ordinal numbers; geometric shapes; fractions; clocks; money; converting and solving word problems; coloring. Finished SSMW!!!! HOORAY!!!!!! But when we looked back, we saw that he had skipped tracing numbers back on the first 4 pages. I told him he could skip it but he insists on finishing the whole book. Adorable.

Read chs 29-30 of LPP

Read Owl Moon by Jane Yolen
Social Studies Day
Relationship between father and child - talked about special times spent with adults. What made the time special? How did it make you feel?
Rules - talked about rules and reasons for rules. Discussed what happens if rules get broken/consequences. Asked if there were any rules we have that they didn't know a reason for and that got a good discussion going. Good way to build trust!
Maturity, self-control, bravery - defined each term and then read certain qsentences out of the book and asked J which of the 3 was the sentence describing about that girl.
Setting - When/where did the story take place
First-time experiences - Asked if there were any FTE's they remembered and how they felt looking forward to them. Also asked if there is anything they are looking forward to doing for the first time now - some responses: riding a horse, driving, seeing a football game)
Brain Quest: J
pgs 68-71 - colors; ordinal numbers; punctuation marks; flags; fairy-tale literature; spelling; greater than/less than; grammar; calendar (needs work!); animal ID; science; Spanish words; clocks; sports
History: J & P
PB - Millard Fillmore - didn't do well with review of past presidents (forgot Tyler and Taylor), my fault for taking a week off with no review, though!
Math: J
SSMW pgs 125-126 - bar graph; double column addition and subtraction; greater than/less than; tally marks
Reading: P
Completed lesson 46 of 100EL
Coloring: J, P & C
Asked kids to draw a picture of a special time they have spent with an adult. They all chose to draw a time when they had taken a walk with Boy Pa and things they saw while they were on the walk. J saw trees and houses. P & C apparently both saw tornadoes.
