Happy Birthday Sue!

Short day today

FIAR: J

Language Day

Discussed contrasting phrases - In the beginning of the story, the thunder was like mountains blowing up, at the end, only mutterings of thunder. Gave him some other examples and then asked him to try to come up with some on his own.

Punctuation - Italics, Quotation marks, Exclamation points

Discussed that the author's use of italics means that he is putting stress on that word, that it is important to the sentence. We went through the book and found all the words in italics and made sure we said the sentences the right way. J thought this was really fun.

Showed him that when the characters are speaking, we can tell where it starts and stops by looking at the placement of the quotation marks.

Showed him the difference in how you would say a sentence if it ended with either: ?, !, or . J had fun saying different sentences all different ways. Good stuff.

Personification - Asked him where personification was used in this story. At first he said the cat, but I told him the cat didn't do anything a cat wasn't supposed to do. Then he came up with it... the storm! And came up with examples of how it was personified. Nice work, J.

Vocabulary - defined and discussed: mandarin (color), bough and errand
