Good day - late start but we got a lot done.

FIAR: J & P

Read 'Who Owns the Sun?' written and illustrated by (14 yr old!) Stacy Chbosky

Social Studies - History - WOTS? is a story taking place in the south in the mid 1800's about a boy and his Dad (Big Jim) who, the boy finds out at the end of the story, are owned by a white farmer. This led to a lengthy discussion on slavery and how it came about, and racism, discrimination, etc. J had lots of questions and said often, "Well, that's just not fair!". He seemed to have a genuine concern for wrongness of slavery. He also mentioned how it was sort of like the story of Moses, how there were slaves in that time, too. How smart! I told him yes, but it was a different race of people then, but it was just as wrong.

Geography - Looked on the map downstairs and showed J & P where most of the slaves lived and J put a mark on GA for location since the book doesn't list a specific location.

Family Relationships - Talked a while about the relationship between Big Jim and his son and the love and respect and trust the son felt for his Dad. Talked about making sure you never develop a root of bitterness when your family comes upon hard times that you can't control, to always trust on God that He will take care of you and He always knows what's best for you.
