October 4, 2008

Took Friday (10/3) off for some shopping and leisure. Happy Birthday Nancy! =)

BQ: J

pgs 4-7 - spelling; addition; phrase recognition; author recognition; geometry; action words; turning sentences into questions; solar system; sports; punctuation; senses; nursery rhymes; very basic multiplication (or compound addition)

Trouble with - spelling; author recognition; solar system; turning sentence into question; action words.

Not sure how I like BQ. The questions are extremely random and I have trouble believing that any first grader would know all of the questions. Is this really the stuff they cover in school at this age?!?

Note: Take Cathy's advice: "Have you sought curriculum guidelines and materials from your local district? Although you are planning on a most involved classical curriculum, it might provide evaluation tools or benchmarks to compare their learning at various stages with traditional schooling. Also, you are paying taxes to the local district.....get the materials, which are available...even for ideas on activities, etc. They don't have to be used on a regular basis, but as reference."

Music: J

ch 5 & 6 of Beatles book

Coloring: P

Kitten coloring book

We've decided to put aside BPW for now and use later as most of the rest of the workbook is writing letters which he just can't do right now. Plan on re-starting reading lessons for P again starting next week to see if he picks up on it any better than he did in August.

FIAR: J

Read The Rag Coat

Art - reviewed warm and cool colors and the feelings they give to illustrations. Drew some pictures using only warm colors.

Bible - discussed the importance of forgiveness (Eph 4:32; Matt 18:23-35; story of Joseph); importance of being around others and not growing bitter (Heb 12:5; 10:25); God watching over those he loves in times of grief (Ps 34:17,18)

Math - Use of geometric shapes - purchased game yesterday (Shape by Shape). Uses geometric shapes to create patterns they give you - sort of like Tangoes but slightly different. Very hard, but fun!

Next Week FIAR: A Pair of Red Clogs by Masako Matsuno
